After 5 months, the police produced a boy who maintained that he was Walter. When Christine denied that he was her son, they convinced her to take him home and "try". She continued to protest that the boy was not her son, gathering physical evidence, and pushing the police for action. Terrified of bad publicity, the police declared her insane, and had her locked up in a psychiatric hospital. The movie works well on several levels. Director Clint Eastwood has shot a beautiful period piece, giving us a glimpse of every day life of ordinary people living around 1930. The film deals with a the loss of a child, ripping at the heart of every parent's fears. There are "bad guys" galore to hate--including a gruesome serial killer, and the LAPD themselves. Its also a thinking person's movie--forcing you to confront feelings about Capital Punishment, and the treatment of women who spoke their mind and challenged authority.
A movie that can make you think...as well as cry.
